Lipograms

Activity 1 – Lipogram

A lipogram is a piece of writing where a particular letter is omitted. In our task I have asked students to remove the letter o.

“Albert, is it true that if you touch a butterfly’s wings, you keep it from flying ever again? Basically, kill it?”

No, it is a myth that you render a butterfly unable to fly by touching its wings. The powdery residue on their wings is actually scales. They shed their scales on a regular basis, so merely touching them is okay.

Character Hot Seating

Character Hot Seating

You have been in Ally’s world for a few weeks now and have learnt more about her and some of the other characters in the book. In a classroom students often have different opinions on why or what motivates a character to do and act a certain way. This activity allows you to form opinions about a character.

TASK

  1. In pairs choose a character you would like to ask specific questions to.
  1. Create a list of 5-10 questions.
  1. Have one child at the front of the room sit in a chair.
  1. This child assumes the identity of one of the characters from the text.
  1. The class then asks the character questions.
  1. The child in the seat answers questions in character.

Monster Project

Activity 2 – Monster Project

Mrs. Pratt from 4/5 at Yahl has created an activity for the students this week. They need to create their very own friendly monster and list the steps needed for students in Yahl to recreate it.

The writing component of the task can be typed on the blog or written out. We look forward to seeing our 4/5 buddies recreating the monsters from our instructions. I wonder how close they will be …….

1. Draw a big circle.

2. Add two antenna on top.

3. Inside the circle draw an ‘m’ that stretches from one side of the circle to the other.

4. Draw two semi ovals under each arch of the ‘m’.

5. Draw a small smile with fangs.

6. Add two wings on each side of the circle.

7. At the bottom of the circle draw a capital ‘U’.

8. Add two lines coming down from the oval.

9. Add two feet to the ends of the lines.

10. Colour the wings blue, the fangs orange, and the feet pink.

Sketchnoting

This task was created by Zeina Chalich from aussieed.com

Sketchnoting builds a connection between verbal and visual components. It is a personal form of note-taking that activates the brain in the process much the same as doodling. Doodling is a way of thinking, of drawing information around a thought process.

TASK

Make visual notes (sketchnotes) about the main events from a chapter in the book. Take photos and upload your notes to the blog or use any available apps to make your visual notes. Label which chapter you are sketching about.

Consider.. Who? What? When? Where? How? Why?

What visual representations will best describe…

* The sequence of events?

* The emotions of the characters?

* The impact of what happened?

* The text you will use?
